Where Thao Dien is now, and the homes we survey
Thao Dien was a ward of District 2 until 1 July 2025, when the city abolished its districts and redrew its wards, the basic units of local government. Resolution 1685/NQ-UBTVQH15 folded all of Thao Dien into a new An Khanh ward. An address written either way reaches us.
Our office is in the same ward, at 72 Nguyen Co Thach in Sala, and Thao Dien is on our regular tree-work schedule. Messages and calls are answered from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, seven days a week.
- Riverside and garden villas
- Mostly on Nguyen Van Huong and Quoc Huong streets: wide gardens, mature trees, a terrace open to the Saigon River and often a private pool.
- Compound houses
- Behind a guarded gate, often under tall trees. Your own trees and those in the shared grounds are told apart at the outset.
- Townhouses
- In the lanes and on the main streets; a few now hold a showroom, a cafe or a small office.
- Apartment grounds
- From Thao Dien Pearl on the river to Gateway Thao Dien and The Nassim: trees in shared grounds are accepted only when the management agrees.
A Thao Dien villa garden: which cut suits which tree
A typical garden here has a lawn, a few large trees, a pergola, a hedge, timber decking round the pool and a terrace towards the river. The nearer a tree stands to any of them, the more the path of each falling branch has to be planned. Each saw cut leaves a wound, so the Up specialist (UpClean's own staff, identity-verified and trained) asks what this round of cutting is for and stops there.
- Branches lying on the terrace roof or gutters
- Single branches go: those touching the roof, a gutter or a window, or hiding a garden light or camera.
- A crown that shades out the lawn
- Crown thinning draws out part of the inner branches; height and outline stay, and sun returns to the grass.
- A tree too big for its garden
- Crown reduction shortens branches that run too high or too far.
- A tree by the pool, the decking or a glass roof
- If it must be felled, the trunk is sawn into sections from the top and each goes down on a rope. Felling is the last option, for a tree that is dead, hollow or leaning dangerously.
- The rest of District 2
- An Phu, Sala, Binh Trung and Cat Lai are covered on our District 2 page.
Low ground, heavy rain and high tides: when to check your trees
Check before the rains, not during them. A Tuoi Tre article of June 2025 on flooding in Thao Dien describes Nguyen Van Huong, Thao Dien and Quoc Huong streets as low ground with old drains; when a downpour meets a high tide, 0.15 to 0.3 m of water can stand for an hour or two. The rainy season runs from May to November.
Tall trees should therefore be inspected late in the dry season, while a dead or weak branch is still easy to tell from a sound one and the soil is not soaked. After a thunderstorm, send us a photo of any cracked branch hanging in the crown, any trunk that leans or shows decay or fungus at the base, and any branch resting on the roof or the wall.
What we do not take on: street trees, power lines and unsafe positions
Trees on pavements, road dividers, in parks and on any public land count as urban trees. Nobody may fell, relocate or heavily prune one without permission from the competent authority, and the work then belongs to the body that manages the tree. So we decline, even when the crown reaches over your wall, though the specialist can help you assemble photos and a description for a request to the local authority.
Any branch touching a power cable, or close to one, we leave alone. We tell you how to report it to the electricity company, which either switches the power off or deals with the branches inside the line's safety corridor itself. Branches well clear of the cable are cut later, once the site is safe.
- At height the specialist works from a stable ladder on a safety line, with helmet, goggles and gloves; a cordon goes up round the base and one person stays below to keep watch.
- Declined at the survey: a tree beyond safe reach, nowhere safe to stand a ladder, or work that requires a specialised lifting platform.
Compound gates, rented villas and businesses in converted houses
In Thao Dien the person living in a house and the person with a say over its trees are often different: villas let to foreigners mostly come furnished and their owners are not always in the city. We ask early whether the owner or the tenant approves the plan and the quote.
On private ground the owner decides. Where there is a management office, felling usually needs its consent as well, and for a tree in shared grounds that consent is our condition for accepting the job. We do not speak for any compound's rules, so please ask yours first.
- Names and photos of the specialists reach you beforehand, for the guards, who show us where to park and which outdoor tap and socket to use.
- The date follows your compound's working hours; cutting on the survey day is rare.
- For a cafe, showroom or office in a converted villa, we cut before opening or on a closing day.
What tree work costs in Thao Dien
No rate per tree exists: reshaping a hedge along the drive and bringing down, section by section, a tall tree that reaches over the glass roof of a carport are too far apart in people, equipment and risk. The survey in your garden is free, and the all-inclusive price arrives in writing with the plan for the stump and the green waste. It changes only with your written agreement.
| Factor | In a Thao Dien home |
|---|---|
| Size | How tall, how thick in the trunk and how wide in the crown. |
| Position and way out | Mid-lawn, against the house, a townhouse yard in a narrow lane or a roof terrace; and the route to the gate. |
| What lies under the crown | A pool, a glass roof, parked cars or a power line forces lowering on ropes, which is slower. |
| How far the cutting goes | Light pruning, reduction or felling, and whether the stump is dealt with. |
| Green waste and hours | How much is carted off, whether you keep the wood, and the hours your compound permits. |
Afterwards, and for international residents: stump, English and booking
Once a tree is down, the stump is as a rule cut level with the ground. Digging it up is proposed only after what lies underground has been checked, because roots may run beneath paving, water pipes and the footing of the boundary wall. Our termite page for Thao Dien counts felled stumps among the places where termites appear in garden villas; if that matters to you, raise it at the survey.
- Timber and clean-up
- Say beforehand which wood you want kept. The rest is gathered, the garden is swept, and you receive an Up Report, our photo record of the job.
- In English
- Tuoi Tre counted nearly 6,000 foreign residents of 102 nationalities in Thao Dien in 2020. The enquiry, the written plan, the quote and the Up Report can all be in English. If you want a specialist who speaks English in the garden, note it when you book; where we cannot arrange one, we say so in advance and support the visit by phone or message.
- Payment and booking
- Payment follows the walk-through, our final check of the work with you, which can be done by video call. To book, send photos of the tree with your street or compound name to 0968 726 135 on WhatsApp or Zalo.
