Frequently asked questions
Stone floor polishing: your questions
Are marble, granite and terrazzo treated the same way?+
No. Marble and terrazzo are calcium-based, so they etch easily with acids but can be crystallised for extra shine. Granite is harder and is usually polished with dedicated compounds and then sealed. We confirm the approach after the survey.
What is crystallisation?+
Crystallisation uses a machine and a specialist solution to create a hard, glossy layer on calcium-based stone such as marble and terrazzo. It brightens the floor and makes it easier to maintain; we'll advise whether your floor needs it or simply a polish.
Does my floor need honing?+
Only if there are deep scratches, widespread etching or uneven tiles. A floor that is simply dull usually needs a deep clean and polish. The test patch helps you decide with confidence.
Is it dusty or noisy?+
We hone wet to keep dust to a minimum. The machines do make some noise, so we schedule work at times that suit your household and your building or community rules.
When can I use the floor again?+
You can walk on it gently once it is dry. Where a sealer has been applied, your specialist will tell you how long to keep it dry and avoid moving heavy furniture before handover.
How do I keep stone floors looking their best?+
Use a pH-neutral cleaner, avoid acidic or harsh alkaline products, place mats at entrances, add felt pads to furniture legs and wipe up lemon juice, wine or coffee straight away.
