Musty smell and mould in a car in Saigon: where the damp comes from, how to clean the seats, and when it needs a garage

Written by the UpClean team · Reviewed by: Trần Nguyễn Hữu Nhật · Updated

A car smells musty when water stays in the cabin long enough for mould to grow on fabric, leather or carpet: wet mats and umbrellas left in a closed car, a spill that reached the seat foam, seats washed with too much water, or a flood. Remove the source, dry the cabin, then clean with as little water as possible. A smell from the aircon vents, or from under the floor after flooding, needs a garage.

Why does my car smell musty, and where is the damp coming from?

Moisture gets into the cabin and cannot get out. Ho Chi Minh City's rainy season lasts several months, with humid air for much of it, and a car kept shut gets little ventilation while wet umbrellas, wet mats and other damp things are left inside. Fabric, foam, carpet and leather take the moisture up; when they stay damp for days, mould spots and the smell follow.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says in its mould guidance that controlling mould means controlling moisture, advises drying anything wet within 24 to 48 hours, and warns that mouldy upholstery and carpet are hard to clean fully. So the order is always: find the water, dry the cabin, then clean.

Where the damp comes fromWhat it means
Wet mats, umbrellas or other damp things left insideYours to fix: take them out and let them dry outside the car.
Milk, vomit or another spill that soaked through the seat coverMilk and vomit tend to leave a smell. Once a spill is in the foam, a surface wipe cannot reach it; it needs extraction cleaning.
Fabric seats washed with a bucketWater left in the foam: slow drying, a damp smell, water marks.

What should I do first about a musty smell in the car?

Dry and air the car before buying any product. Air fresheners only lay a scent over the smell and make the source harder to find.

  • Take out the mats, umbrellas and anything else damp.
  • Open the doors where the car is safe, at a dry time of day; airing it in the rain or in damp air only adds moisture.
  • Vacuum the seats, the seat gaps, the floor, the boot and the door pockets.
  • Check the seats, the headliner (the fabric lining of the roof) and the carpet under the mats for mould spots.
  • Never run an ozone generator with a person or pet inside: ozone can irritate the airways.

How do I clean fabric car seats at home without soaking the foam?

Use a cloth that is barely damp, never a bucket. A bucket-and-cloth wash usually leaves so much water in the foam that the seat stays wet for a long time, takes on the very smell you set out to remove and dries with marks. All-purpose cleaners can fade the fabric.

  • Vacuum slowly with a brush head along the seams and into the gap between seat and backrest.
  • Mix a little colourless washing-up liquid in warm water and test it with a white cloth on a hidden part of the seat.
  • Wring a white microfibre cloth until almost dry and wipe one panel at a time, always the same way. Never pour or spray a lot of liquid onto the seat.
  • Go over the panel with a cloth dampened in plain water, blot with a dry towel and leave the windows open where the car is safe. A hot hairdryer held close can scorch synthetic fibres.
  • Use even less liquid on perforated, heated or cooled seats, and never spray the headliner, which is glued in place and can sag when wet.

How do I clean leather car seats, and what should never touch them?

Use a pH-neutral cleaner made for leather, applied with a cloth, and never wet-wash the seat. Keep alcohol wipes, glass cleaner, all-purpose sprays, bleach, ammonia, solvents, baking soda, strong vinegar, cooking oil, melamine sponges and stiff brushes away from it. Existing cracks and peeling stay: cleaning cannot restore them.

  • Vacuum the seams and the crease at the base of the backrest; grit left there scratches the leather.
  • Test the cleaner somewhere hidden, then spray it onto a microfibre cloth, not the seat, and wipe gently in small circles.
  • Wipe again with a cloth dampened in plain water and dry at once; on perforated leather, use only a well-wrung cloth.
  • Let it dry in the air, out of strong sun and without a hairdryer; then rub in a thin layer of leather conditioner, leave it as the label directs and wipe it even. A heavy layer attracts dust and stays tacky.

How do I get rid of mould in a car: seats, carpet and headliner?

Treat small surface spots yourself with the doors open; leave anything deeper to a specialist. Wear gloves, a fine-particle mask and eye protection, as spores can irritate the airways, and keep anyone with asthma or allergies, pregnant women and small children away.

Never mix chlorine bleach with ammonia, vinegar or an acidic cleaner, which can release toxic gas, and keep it off coloured fabric. If spots return within days, the smell seems to come from inside the seat, or a dark stain keeps growing, the mould is in the foam, beyond a surface wipe.

SurfaceHow to treat mould spots
Fabric seats and carpetBrush small dry spots off lightly, never in a closed cabin, and vacuum with a well-filtered machine. Wipe the rest with diluted washing-up liquid or diluted white vinegar on a barely damp cloth, after a hidden-spot test. Never dry-brush a large patch.
LeatherA slightly damp cloth with a leather cleaner, then thorough drying and moving air. Spreading or returning spots need a professional clean.
HeadlinerDab one spot at a time with a barely damp cloth, no spraying. Wide or returning spots go to a specialist.
Child car seatsClean removable covers as the maker's label directs. Wipe the harness straps on the surface only and never soak them, so that they keep their strength.

How do I get rid of the smell after milk, vomit, a pet or a spilt drink?

Get the liquid out before it reaches the foam; if it already has, ask for help early. Blot, never rub, and use no hot water: hard rubbing or hot water can spread a stain and set it deeper. Baking soda sprinkled on dry fabric and vacuumed off eases only a light odour, and does not belong on leather.

What happenedWhat to do
Milk, or a child's vomitBlot as dry as possible, then apply an enzyme cleaner made for organic stains, after a hidden-spot test; it breaks down the source of the smell.
Pet urineBlot and use an enzyme cleaner. Urine in the foam needs extraction; a scented spray only hides it.
Coffee, milk tea, soft drinksBlot with a dry cloth, then dab with diluted washing-up liquid. An old stain may keep a faint ring.
Sweat on headrests and seat edgesExtraction with spot treatment lightens it on fabric; on leather an old mark may have discoloured the finish.
Ink, grease, lipstickTest a small spot first; some inks and dyes may not come out completely. No alcohol on leather, where it spreads ink.

Which jobs need a garage rather than car interior cleaning?

Anything that means opening up the car or working on its systems. UpClean cleans the passenger cabin and the boot only. The technical notes in the Up Report, the record sent to you after the visit, can flag anything that needs a garage.

JobWhy it goes to a garage
A musty smell from the aircon ventsThe car's air-conditioning system is outside the service; UpClean does not work on it.
A smell that stays after a floodIt can sit in the sound insulation under the floor, which a garage has to open up and check.
Taking the seats outSeats can contain airbags, sensors and wiring, so UpClean cleans them in place.
Electrics, the engine bay, washing the bodywork, paint polishing, ceramic coatingWork for a garage or car-care centre.

How long do car seats take to dry after cleaning?

There is no fixed time. An extraction machine sprays a cleaning solution into the fabric and draws it straight back out with the dirt and most of the water, so fabric seats are left slightly damp, not wet. The rest depends on the material, the foam's thickness, the weather and the ventilation, and is slower in the wet months. Leather is wiped dry at once. The specialist gives you an expected time at handover. To help it along:

  • Leave the windows open a little while the car is parked somewhere safe.
  • When driving, set the aircon to draw in outside air.
  • Avoid sitting on the seats in wet clothes for the first few hours.

When is professional car upholstery cleaning worth it, and what does it cost?

Book one when the smell survives drying and wiping, when the seats carry many stains, when the headliner needs cleaning, or before you sell a car or take over a used one. For a car in daily use, every few months keeps the seats' colour and the cabin pleasant; more often with small children, pets or meals on board.

UpClean has no single listed price for car interiors. Most cars are quoted from photos of the seats, headliner and carpet, with the model and number of seats; unusual cases get a free survey. The written, all-inclusive quote changes only with your written agreement and states the expected duration. It depends on:

What is includedSeats only, or also headliner, carpets, door cards and dashboard.
Dirt and odourDust, old stains, food or pet smells, or mould after flooding.

What UpClean does for car interior cleaning at home, and how to book

The work is done where the car is parked, if cleaning is allowed there: a driveway, a townhouse or villa garage, or an apartment basement with management's agreement. Buildings often have rules on basement work, power and waste water, so ask first; UpClean sends the specialist's name and photo in advance for you to register the visit. The extraction machine needs a nearby socket; dirty water goes into its tank, never onto the basement floor.

The Up specialist, identity-verified and trained to the Up Standard, photographs the interior as found and covers the dashboard and electronics before cleaning seats, headliner, carpet and the surfaces you touch. Take the car's papers and valuables out beforehand. The Up Report then arrives by WhatsApp or Zalo with before-and-after photos; reply to it if anything in the agreed scope needs redoing, free of charge within the Warranty Policy period, 48 hours by default. You pay after the walk-through, by transfer or cash.

To book, send photos, the car model and where it is parked to 0968 726 135 (phone, WhatsApp or Zalo), 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily. Quotes, confirmations and the Up Report can be in English. If you want a specialist who speaks English, say so when booking; if we cannot arrange one, we tell you in advance and support you by phone or message.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get a musty smell out of my car?+

Find and remove the damp first: wet mats, umbrellas, or a spill that has reached the seat foam. Air the car at a dry time of day, vacuum everything and wipe the seats with a barely damp cloth. A smell from the aircon vents, or one that stays after a flood, is garage work.

Can I use bleach on mould in my car?+

Not on coloured fabric, where it can strip colour and weaken fibres, and never on leather or mixed with other cleaners. Wipe small fabric spots with diluted washing-up liquid or diluted white vinegar after a hidden-spot test.

How long does a car seat take to dry after cleaning?+

Extraction leaves fabric slightly damp; full drying depends on the fabric, foam, weather and ventilation, and is slower in the rainy season. Leather can be used sooner. You get an expected time at handover.

My car was flooded. Will cleaning the interior remove the smell?+

Cleaning covers the seats, carpet and headliner, but a smell can remain in the sound insulation under the floor, which a garage has to open up and check.

How much does car interior cleaning cost in Ho Chi Minh City?+

There is no single listed price. Send photos of the seats, headliner and carpet with the model and number of seats for an all-inclusive written quote; unusual cases get a free survey.

Do you take the seats out or clean the car's aircon?+

No. Seats can contain airbags, sensors and wiring, so they are cleaned in place. The car's aircon, electrics, engine bay and bodywork are garage work.
