Tết cleaning checklist for Ho Chi Minh City: when to book and what to clean before Lunar New Year 2027

Written by the UpClean team · Reviewed by: Trần Nguyễn Hữu Nhật · Updated

The pre-Tết clean is the thorough clean that Vietnamese households give the home before Lunar New Year, to see out the old year and welcome the new one. In 2027 the first day of Tết is Saturday 6 February. Start in late December: clear out and book services first, have the aircon and fabrics cleaned in mid-January, finish the deep clean before Saturday 30 January, and keep the last week for the altar, flowers and light cleaning. UpClean charges each item at its listed price, with no Tết surcharge.

What is the pre-Tết clean, and why do so many households book it?

Tết is the Lunar New Year. Cleaning the whole home before it is a long-standing habit of many Vietnamese families: a clean, orderly home sees out the old year and welcomes the new one. Many families also limit sweeping and taking out rubbish in the first days of the year, so the work has to be finished before New Year's Eve.

That puts most households' cleaning into the same few weeks. Demand usually rises in the last lunar month, cleaning teams have only so many hours, the roads are crowded and weekend slots go first. A household new to Saigon books for the same practical reasons: guests are coming, the aircon, curtains and sofa are overdue, or the end of the year is simply busy.

When is Tết 2027, and when should you start and book?

The first day of Tết in 2027 is Saturday 6 February. Start five to six weeks ahead, in late December 2026, and give each week one group of jobs. Book services four to six weeks ahead; UpClean suggests getting in touch in December 2026 or early January 2027, above all if you want several items or a weekend.

DateWhat it means for your plan
Saturday 30 January 2027The 23rd day of the last lunar month, when many families hold the send-off for the Kitchen Gods (ong Cong, ong Tao) and clean the family altar. Have the heavy cleaning done before this day.
Friday 5 February 2027New Year's Eve. It falls on the 29th, because the last lunar month of the outgoing year is a short one. Finish the light cleaning and take out the last rubbish before this evening.
Saturday 6 February 2027The first day of Tết and of the Year of the Goat (Dinh Mui).

What should you do each week before Tết?

The plan spreads the work over the six weeks before Tết 2027. Jobs that drop dust come first; the deep clean follows.

WeekJobs
26 December – 8 January (five to six weeks before)Walk round the home and write the list. Sort, give away or sell what you no longer use. Book the specialist jobs: aircon, sofa, mattresses, curtains, deep clean.
9–15 January (four weeks before)Put wardrobes, the shoe cabinet, the storeroom and bookshelves in order. Wash thick blankets and stored coats. Have the aircon cleaned before any other surface, because dust can fall onto the floor and furniture.
16–22 January (three weeks before)Have the sofa, mattresses, curtains and rugs cleaned; fabrics need time to dry before they are re-hung and re-laid. Replace failed bulbs, curtain cords and hooks.
23–29 January (two weeks before)Deep clean the whole home: kitchen, bathrooms, glass, floors, ceilings and fans. Clear out the fridge to make room for Tết food.
30 January – 5 February (the last week)If the home has a family altar, it is cleaned now, following the family's custom. Arrange flowers and set out the five-fruit tray. Dust lightly, vacuum, take out the rubbish and wash the cloths one last time before New Year's Eve.

What needs cleaning in each room?

Clear out storerooms and cupboards first, then work from the top down and from the innermost room outwards: ceilings, fans and lights first, floors last. The kitchen and bathrooms take longest, so give them a session of their own.

RoomChecklist
Entrance and living roomFront door, handles, doorbell and shoe cabinet; doormat washed or replaced. Ceiling fan and lights, with the power off. Sofa, cushions and the gaps between seats vacuumed. TV unit, display cabinets, picture frames, and the dust behind the TV. Curtains and rails vacuumed; window glass, sills and sliding-door tracks. Skirting, switches and sockets with a well-wrung damp cloth.
Kitchen and dining areaFridge cleared of expired food and its trays and door seal wiped, before the Tết food shopping. Range hood filter, hob, splashback and cabinet handles. Insides of the microwave, oven and air fryer, as the manufacturer directs. Spice and crockery cupboards; dates on dry goods. Sink, trap, bin, dining table, chairs and pendant lights.
BedroomsSheets, pillows, duvets and mattress protectors washed. Mattresses and the floor under the beds vacuumed. Wardrobes and desks put in order.
BathroomsLimescale off the toilet, shower screen and taps. Grout and floor drain scrubbed. Extractor fan cover washed. Worn bath mats and towels replaced.
Balcony and loggiaLeaves swept, floor washed, drain hole cleared. Railings and drying rack wiped. Washing machine and detergent drawer cleaned. Potted plants tended or replaced.
Family altar areaCleaned according to the family's custom, at the time the family usually chooses. Take care with candles, incense and decorative electric lights.

Which jobs should you book with a service, and in what order?

Book the jobs that need machines, drying time or safety equipment, in an order that does not undo earlier work.

JobWhen, and why
Aircon cleaningFirst. Cleaning an aircon unit can drop dust and water onto the floor and furniture below; done after the deep clean, it means wiping them again.
Sofa, mattress, curtain and rug cleaningNext. Fabrics need time to dry, so finish them at least a few days before the deep clean.
Pest control, if you need itBefore the deep clean. Follow the provider's advice on how long to stay out of the treated area.
Deep cleanAbout two weeks before Tết, so that the home is clean going into the week of shopping and the Kitchen Gods' day. If you would rather have it in the final week, ask early: the weeks closest to Tết fill first.
Outside glass on a high-riseWork at height needs a team with the equipment and safety procedures for it, and many buildings ask for advance registration. UpClean does not do this work; it cleans inside glass and glass within safe reach.

What does a Tết cleaning service cover, and what does it cost?

UpClean's Tết cleaning is one plan: a deep clean with aircon, sofa and curtain cleaning, plus mattresses or rugs if you want them. The deep clean covers floors, walls within reach, doors, inside glass, the kitchen and the bathrooms, and aircon cleaning includes a free gas-pressure check. Jobs are sequenced so that a clean floor is not dirtied again, and a home with many items may be split into two visits.

The cost is the sum of the listed prices of the items you choose. There is no separate Tết price and no increase before the holiday; the only reduction is on aircon, where each unit from the 3rd in the same visit is 10% less. The total reaches you as one all-inclusive quote in writing, and nothing is added unless you agree in writing. The examples apply each item's minimum and the aircon discount; your own quote is confirmed from your floor area and list of items.

HomeExample at listed prices
Two-bedroom apartment, about 70 m²Deep clean 1,050,000 VND + three aircon units (two of 1–1.5 HP, one of 2 HP) 775,000 VND + three-seat fabric sofa 390,000 VND + 12 m² of curtains 480,000 VND = 2,695,000 VND.
Villa, about 300 m²Deep clean 6,000,000 VND + six aircon units (four of 1–1.5 HP, two ceiling cassettes) 2,000,000 VND + seven-seat leather sofa with two ottomans 1,220,000 VND + 40 m² of curtains, taken down and re-hung 1,700,000 VND = 10,920,000 VND.

What should you prepare before the team arrives?

You do not need to move large furniture: the Up specialist, UpClean's trained and identity-verified cleaner, photographs where things stand, moves them only within the agreed scope and puts them back.

  • Put jewellery, documents, cash and fragile items away.
  • Sort what to keep from what to throw away; specialists throw nothing away on their own initiative.
  • Register the team with building management if your building requires it; many ask for a list of names and the working hours. UpClean sends each specialist's name and photo in advance.
  • Point out anything that needs special care: paintings, ceramics, plants, electronics. Around a family altar, specialists clean the walls, floor and shelves; the altar itself is touched only with the householder's consent and as they direct.
  • Keep power and water on throughout, and tell us where the team can park or bring equipment in.
  • Decide which room goes first and which must stay in use. Children and pets should be in a separate room while machines and products are in use.
  • Finish any painting, new curtains or furniture fitting before the deep clean, so that the dust does not come back.

How do you stay safe if you do part of the cleaning yourself?

  • Use a sturdy A-frame ladder, with someone holding it, for fans, lights and ceilings; never a swivel chair or a plastic stool.
  • Switch off the power before wiping lights, fans, sockets and appliances.
  • Do not mix cleaning products, above all chlorine bleach with acidic products or ammonia.
  • Do not clean the outside of high-rise windows yourself or lean out over the balcony railing.
  • Keep products out of children's reach, air the room while using them, and do not let older family members climb ladders.

What happens over the holiday itself, and after it?

UpClean's normal hours are 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, seven days a week. Its working days during the Tết holiday are announced separately, so if you need a visit straight after a year-end party or just after the holiday, ask in advance. This guide covers cleaning only and does not list which other services close.

After a holiday with many guests, many households want one more visit before work starts again. It can be reserved together with the pre-Tết clean, and the date is confirmed against the schedule after the holiday.

How UpClean handles Tết cleaning, and how to book

Tell us the home type, the floor area and the items you want, by phone, WhatsApp or Zalo on 0968 726 135, and we suggest the order of work. Enquiries, quotes, booking confirmations and the Up Report, the photo report sent after every visit, can all be in English. If you want a specialist who speaks English in your home, say so when you book; if we cannot arrange it, we tell you in advance and support you by phone or message.

The booking is confirmed in writing, with each specialist's name, photo and contact number. Someone should be at home at the start, to agree the list, and at the walk-through, the check of the work at the end; if you will be away, agree beforehand how the key and access card are handed over. The Up Report arrives by WhatsApp or Zalo with before-and-after photos, the checklist completed, and start and finish times. You pay after the walk-through, by bank transfer or cash. An item within the agreed scope that falls short is redone free of charge if you reply to the report within 48 hours.
