Which pillows and duvets can be machine-washed?
The filling decides, and the care label has the final say. The inner, meaning the stuffed pillow or the duvet itself (a comforter, in American usage), is bulky, its filling can clump when soaked, and it dries slowly in an apartment with little sun. If an item has no label, or the label says dry-clean only (“chỉ giặt khô” on a Vietnamese label), take it to a dry cleaner.
| Filling or item | Home washing machine? |
|---|---|
| Polyester and other synthetic fibre | Often yes, if the label allows it: a gentle programme, a thorough rinse, a hard spin, then drying right through. |
| Down and feather | Only as the label says. A full wash needs a machine big enough for the item, often a laundry's, and complete drying with the filling shaken out evenly so that it neither clumps nor smells. |
| Wool and silk | No. A deep clean follows the label at a dry cleaner; between cleans, light vacuuming only, with no steam and no scrubbing. |
| Memory foam | No. Foam soaks up water fast and tears when wet, and wringing it can split or flatten it. Wash the cover; vacuum the core. |
| Latex | No. Heat, direct sun, oils and solvents age latex until it discolours and crumbles, and soaked latex turns heavy and tears easily. Wash the cover only. |
| Buckwheat hull, bead and herbal fillings | No. The filling must stay dry. Wash the case separately and air the filling somewhere dry, as its instructions say. |
| Mattress protector | Yes, by the label. A waterproof one gets a gentle wash and no high-heat drying. |
| Electric blanket or heated pad | Only as the maker's manual directs: there is wiring and a controller inside. |
How do I wash a pillow or a duvet in a home machine without ruining the filling?
Treat marks first, give the filling room to move, and put more care into the spin and the drying than into the wash.
- Read the label for temperature, programme and tumble drying. If it says dry-clean only, stop.
- Remove the pillowcase or duvet cover and wash it separately.
- Dab sweat and drink stains with a cloth and a little diluted pH-neutral detergent, from the edge of the mark towards its centre, then blot. Use cold water only on blood, since hot water can set it in the fibres.
- Check the fit. An item too big for the drum tends to go lumpy; a laundry with a large-drum machine suits it better.
- Pick a gentle programme at the temperature on the label, with a thorough rinse.
- Spin well: water the machine removes is water that need not evaporate in humid air.
Does a front-loader or a top-loader treat bedding better?
According to ENERGY STAR, a programme of the US Environmental Protection Agency, front-loaders are gentler on fabric than top-loaders with a central agitator. Front-loaders also spin faster, so things come out drier. Most top-loaders common in Vietnam use a low wash plate, the pulsator, instead of an agitator, which narrows the gap.
Both types collect residue between the inner drum and the outer tub. In a top-loader it can break off as black flecks on freshly washed bedding, and a front-loader's rubber door seal grows mould spots if it is not wiped.

How do I dry pillows and a duvet in the rainy season without a musty smell?
Plan the drying before you wash. In Ho Chi Minh City's rainy season the air is humid and a thick filling dries considerably more slowly; filling left damp inside can start to smell even when the surface feels dry.
- Wash on a day without rain and start in the morning.
- Spread or hang the item somewhere airy. Keep fabrics that fade out of strong sun, and latex out of the sun altogether.
- In a closed room, run a dehumidifier or the aircon's Dry mode with a standing fan aimed at the item.
- Shake down and feather out evenly as they dry, or use a dryer if the label allows.
- Keep hot hairdryers, irons and tumble dryers away from foam and latex.
- In a high-rise, check safety and the building's rules before putting bedding out on the balcony.
- Before use, press deep into the filling in several places, as you would to check a cleaned mattress; any spot that feels cool or damp needs more time.

Should I take a duvet to a laundry or a dry cleaner, and what should I ask first?
Three kinds of item belong at a laundry or dry cleaner: anything too big for your drum, a down or feather duvet needing a full wash, and silk, wool or anything labelled dry-clean only.
- Show the care label and ask whether they will follow it.
- Ask whether the machine is large enough for the filling to move without clumping.
- Ask how it will be dried, whether it comes back dry right through and, for down and feather, whether the filling is shaken out evenly.
- Agree the price per item before they start, and ask what could be added later.
- Point out the marks you care about; old sweat stains may only fade.
| Item | Where to have it cleaned |
|---|---|
| Sheets, covers, plain mattress protectors | Your own machine, by the label. |
| Synthetic-fill pillows and duvets | At home if they fit the drum; otherwise a laundry with a large machine, or vacuuming and steam in the home. |
| Down and feather duvets needing a full wash | A laundry with machines suited to the size, following the label. In the home: vacuuming of the casing and spot-cleaning with very little moisture. |
| Silk, wool, unlabelled or dry-clean only | A dry cleaner. In the home, light vacuuming only. |
| Memory foam, latex and buckwheat pillows | Not a laundry item. Cover washed, core vacuumed and aired. |
| Bedding from a room with bed bugs | The US EPA advises a dryer on high heat: wash as hot as the label allows, then dry completely on high heat. Without a dryer at home, take the items in sealed bags to a laundry and open the bags at the drum. |
How often should pillows, duvets and mattress protectors be washed, and when should a pillow be replaced?
These intervals assume ordinary use; shorten them with young children, older people, pets or anyone sensitive to dust. Between washes, covers and a mattress protector limit how much sweat and skin reach the inners. Open the bedroom windows to air it, let the duvet air before folding it and keep pets off the inners.
| Item | How often |
|---|---|
| Sheets and pillowcases | Every week. |
| Duvet cover | Every one to two weeks, depending on the season and use. |
| Mattress protector | Monthly, and straight away after a spill. |
| Pillow and duvet inners | A deep clean every few months, ideally alongside the mattress. |
| Replacing a pillow | When it stays flat or lumpy and no longer springs back after a light pat. |
Does washing get rid of dust mites?
Not completely: regular cleaning reduces them, but no cleaning method removes them altogether. Dust mites are tiny organisms that thrive in warm, humid places where skin flakes gather, such as bedding; the mites, their remains and their droppings are part of the household dust many sensitive people react to. Vacuuming inners with a fine-dust filter takes away some of what builds up at the surface, and steam, where the filling allows, helps clean deeper. That is hygiene, not treatment: UpClean makes no kill-rate or medical claim, and anyone with an allergy should ask a doctor.

When is an in-home bedding cleaning service worth booking?
When the inners need cleaning and a home wash is impractical. Nothing is soaked: the inners are vacuumed with a fine-dust filter and steamed in your bedroom where the material allows. A down duvet that needs a full wash still belongs at a laundry; the specialist advises after seeing photos.
- Several beds, or inners not cleaned for a long time.
- Pillows that smell of sweat, or sneezing and an itchy nose in bed.
- Before the rainy season, in a damp spell, or after illness in the household.
- Before guests or Tết, or on moving in.
What does bedding cleaning cost at home?
UpClean lists a fixed price per item, and each covers vacuuming, steaming and deodorising; a visit costs at least 390,000 VND. The written quote, confirmed before you book, depends on the number of beds and items, the material (down, silk and memory foam take more care than synthetic fill), the condition, and extras such as washing sheets. Send photos of each item and its label; nothing is added without your written agreement.
| Item | Fixed price at home |
|---|---|
| Pillow | 70,000 VND each. |
| Single duvet | 150,000 VND. |
| Double duvet | 200,000 VND. |
| Mattress protector | 80,000 VND. |
| Full set for one bed: 2 pillows, 1 duvet, 1 mattress protector | 390,000 VND per set. |
| Booked with mattress cleaning | 20% off the bedding; the mattress is charged at its own listed price. |
What does UpClean do on a visit, and how do I book?
The Up specialist, an identity-verified cleaner trained to the Up Standard, lays a work sheet by the bed and photographs each item before its cover comes off. Inners are vacuumed on both sides in overlapping passes, above all along seams and corners; the steam head keeps moving so moisture stays shallow. While the bedding airs, the bed frame, headboard and the space under the bed within reach are vacuumed, then the bed is made up in the clean sheets you set out. The Up Report, the photo report sent by WhatsApp or Zalo, follows: before-and-after photos, the checklist, times and drying advice. If an item within the agreed scope is not right, reply to the report; it is redone free of charge within 48 hours.
Drying time depends on thickness, material and airflow, so keep spare pillows ready after an afternoon booking. To book, call or message 0968 726 135 (phone, WhatsApp, Zalo), 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM daily. Quotes, confirmations and the Up Report can be in English. Ask for an English-speaking specialist when booking; if one cannot be arranged, you are told in advance and helped by phone or message. You receive the specialist's name, photo and contact number beforehand, which you can pass to building management if your building registers outside staff. Payment is after the walk-through, by bank transfer or cash.

Frequently asked questions
Can you put pillows in the washing machine?+
Synthetic-fibre pillows often can, if the label allows: gentle programme, thorough rinse, strong spin, complete drying. Memory foam, latex and buckwheat pillows cannot; wash only their covers. Down and feather follow the label exactly.
Can I wash a down duvet at home?+
Only if the label allows it and the drum is large enough. A laundry with suitable machines is usually the better place, and the duvet must dry completely with the filling shaken out evenly, or it can clump and smell.
How do I clean a memory foam pillow?+
Wash the removable cover by its label, vacuum the core and treat marks with a cloth wrung almost dry. Never soak, steam directly or wring the foam.
Why does my pillow smell musty after washing?+
The likely cause is filling still damp inside. Dry it again with a dehumidifier or the aircon on Dry mode and a fan, until no spot feels cool or damp. Black flecks on the bedding as well point to residue in the washing machine.
Can a duvet or comforter go in the tumble dryer?+
It depends on the filling and the label. Down and feather can if the label allows, provided the filling ends up fully dry and evenly spread. Waterproof protectors should not be dried on high heat, and latex and foam never go in a dryer.
Does UpClean collect bedding to wash and bring back?+
Not at present. Everything is done in your home, and sheets and covers can be washed in your own machine on request.
Should pillows and duvets be cleaned with the mattress?+
If the mattress is also due, yes: the whole bed is done in one visit, and the bedding is 20% off when booked with mattress cleaning.
