Why are marble and granite stairs slippery, and when are they most dangerous?
Polished stone is smooth by design: the shine on marble, granite and terrazzo is the stone itself ground flat, not a coating. The glossier the tread, the more slippery it gets when wet or in socks, which matters most in homes with elderly relatives, young children or pets.
| Moment | What happens, and what to do |
|---|---|
| Just after mopping | Wet polished stone stays slippery until it dries. Wring the cloth hard and dry each step. |
| After a spill | Wipe it up at once. Wine, soft drinks and lemon juice are acidic and can also leave dull marks on marble. |
| In socks, or straight from the shower | Glossy treads are more slippery in socks. Put a mat at the bathroom door and another at the foot of the stairs. |
| While the stairs are being polished | Wet steps carry warning signs and a dry route stays open; keep children and pets off the stairs as far as possible. |
Which cleaning habits make stone stairs more slippery or duller?
Anything that leaves a film or leaves water behind. Routine cleaning should take dirt off the stone and leave nothing on it.
| Habit | Effect on the stairs |
|---|---|
| Wax, shine oil or a polish that coats the surface | A quick gloss that wears off along the walking line, holds dust and can be slippery when wet. UpClean advises against waxing stairs. |
| Cooking oil, candle wax or a floor cleaner with wax, used for shine | Each leaves a film that gathers dust. |
| A mop or cloth that is not wrung out | Treads stay wet for longer, and water should not stand on the stone or in the grout. |
| Soap left behind | A soap film dulls the surface. Rinse with a second cloth and plain water. |
| Vinegar, lemon, bathroom or limescale cleaners | Acids etch marble, and terrazzo with calcium-based chips, into dull patches: damage, not dirt, removed only by honing and re-polishing. |
| Bleach, scouring powder, metal scourers | Scouring powder and metal scourers stay off natural stone. Bleach stays off marble and should be used sparingly on granite. |
How do I make stone stairs less slippery: finish, anti-slip strips and mats?
- Choose the finish on a test step. The specialist treats one step first and usually suggests comparing a mirror gloss with a moderate satin; with elderly relatives, children or pets at home, a moderate sheen on the treads is usually the balance between appearance and safety.
- Keep the strips you have. Anti-slip strips and nosing trims (profiles fixed along the nosing, the front edge of a step) stay in place during polishing and are cleaned with the tread.
- Stop sand at the door. Lay mats at the doors from the garden, balcony and garage, at the bathroom door and at the foot of the stairs. Fine sand is what scratches stone, marble most of all.
- Wipe spills as they happen, and never wax or oil the treads for shine.
How should a stone staircase be cleaned from week to week?
Weekly staircase cleaning is the household's part. Care guidance from the Natural Stone Institute (formerly the Marble Institute of America) favours neutral cleaners, stone soaps or mild washing-up liquid, diluted, on natural stone, and warns that vinegar and lemon can etch marble.
- Vacuum or sweep each tread first, into the corners and along the skirting, or the cloth drags grit across the stone.
- Work from the top step down, the order Up specialists follow on stairs.
- Wipe the tread, the riser (the upright face) and the nosing with a well-wrung microfibre cloth and plain water or a pH-neutral cleaner.
- After a cleaner, rinse with a second cloth and plain water, then dry each step.
- Keep vinegar, lemon, bleach, bathroom cleaners and limescale removers away from the stairs.
- Now and then, drip water on a busy tread. Drops that stay as beads mean the sealer is still working; stone that darkens fast needs resealing.
How should timber stairs and handrails be cleaned?
Timber stairs take very little water: vacuum the gaps between steps, wipe off shoe marks with a cleaner made for coated wood and dry at once, keeping moisture out of the joints. UpClean cleans and conditions the existing finish only; peeled coating, scratches into the grain, or a sagging or creaking step need a timber finishing contractor.
Small round holes above fine, dry powder point to woodworm, which in stairs calls for a survey: a heavy infestation can weaken them. Some woodworm favour damp timber, so keep the space under the stairs aired.
| Rail or balustrade | How it is cleaned |
|---|---|
| Wooden handrail | Hand oils collect at the turns and on the newel post, where the rail starts. They are wiped off and the wood conditioned, with no sanding and no solvents that dull the finish. |
| Glass balustrade | Both faces are cleaned of fingerprints and water marks, and the clamps and silicone joints wiped. Tall stairwell glass is cleaned only within safe reach from the steps; higher panels are surveyed first. |
| Stainless steel rails and posts | Hand oils and water marks are cleaned off and the steel is polished along its grain, without chlorine cleaners or metal scourers. Deep rust or heavy scratches may only fade. |
| Powder-coated steel | Wiped with a mild solution. Rust and peeling paint are recorded, not treated. |
Why do stone stairs wear unevenly, and when are they due for attention?
Wear runs down the middle of the treads, the nosing usually goes first, and the foot of the stairs takes the most sand from outside, so it dulls first. Marble, roughly 3 to 4 on the Mohs scale of hardness, scratches easily and is etched by acids; granite, roughly 6 to 7, resists wear and is less affected by household acids. In terrazzo, the cement or resin binder usually takes up liquid more readily than the stone chips. Signs that a staircase is due for attention:
- A wear path along the treads, or nosings gone dull.
- Water rings, drink marks or etching on marble.
- Water that soaks in and darkens the stone.
- A handrail that stays sticky after wiping.
- A year since the last polish, or a move-in, a renovation or Tết ahead.
Do the stairs need honing, polishing or only a deep clean?
Only what their condition calls for, confirmed on the test step. A merely dull step usually improves clearly with deep cleaning and polishing. Honing, with diamond pads from coarse to fine, is kept for deep scratches, a worn walking line and acid etching on marble, because every pass removes a thin layer of stone.
Honing, polishing and crystallising are not do-it-yourself work: they need hand-held machines, pads in several grits and practice on nosings. Done wrongly, they can leave patchy marks, uneven shine between steps or duller marble, and slurry (the water and stone fines from honing) can run onto a timber floor below, or a slipping machine can chip a nosing.
| What you see | What is usually done |
|---|---|
| Dull treads, no scratches | Deep clean and polish. Plenty of dull stone is simply dirty. |
| Scratches, a worn walking line or worn nosings | Honing, then polishing; nosings by hand-held machine and by hand. |
| Pale, dull patches on marble | Usually acid etching. Light honing and re-polishing on the spot. |
| Marble, or terrazzo with calcium-based chips | Can be crystallised: a specialist solution reacts with the calcium-based surface under the machine, leaving it glossier and more durable. |
| Granite | Not crystallised. Polished with powders and pads for hard stone, then sealed; honing it takes longer. |
| Water darkens the stone | The sealer has worn: deep clean and reseal. |
| Engineered stone or tiled steps | UpClean looks at close-up photos before confirming whether it takes the job. Tile gets its shine in the factory and is not honed like stone. |
What does stair polishing cost?
UpClean lists stair work per step and per treatment, with landings, handrails and glass panels priced separately; curved and winder stairs carry a surcharge because they take longer. Prices are all-inclusive; nothing is added on the day unless you approve it.
The home survey is free. Which treatment each flight gets is settled on the test step, and the written quote states the treatments, scope and working time; photos sent by WhatsApp or Zalo give a provisional figure first. A staircase over several floors can be split across visits so that the household can still get around.

What can stair polishing not fix?
Polishing restores a surface; it does not rebuild stone or timber. The specialist points out and photographs these limits before work starts:
- Chips, cracks and broken steps or nosings, which are repairs for a stone contractor. A nosing that is only worn dull can be honed and re-polished.
- Deep-set stains, which may only fade, and colour differences between pieces of stone.
- Edge trims to replace or handrails to repaint, noted separately for you to arrange.
What UpClean does for your stairs, and how to book
The specialist surveys and treats a test step, sends a written plan and quote, protects the walls, handrails, floor below and nearby furniture, and photographs the staircase. Work runs from the top step down at hours that suit your household and the building; stone is honed wet and the slurry collected as it forms. The approved test step is the sign-off standard: within 48 hours of the Up Report, the before-and-after photo record sent by WhatsApp or Zalo, any step that falls short is redone free of charge. Freshly sealed steps must stay dry a little longer; the report says how long.
Call or message 0968 726 135 (phone, WhatsApp or Zalo), 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM every day, with wide and close-up photos. The quote, confirmation and Up Report can be in English, and you can ask for a specialist who speaks English; if one cannot be arranged, we say so in advance and support you by phone or message. Up specialists are identity-verified and trained to the Up Standard, UpClean's working standard. Their name and photo reach you before the visit, so that you can register them with building management if your building asks residents to do so. Payment follows the walk-through, by bank transfer or cash.

Frequently asked questions
Are polished marble stairs slippery?+
More so when wet or walked on in socks, and the glossier the finish, the more slippery they are. A moderate satin on the treads, chosen on the test step, is usually the balance between appearance and safety.
How do I make my stairs anti-slip without replacing the stone?+
Keep the treads dry and wax-free, put mats at the foot of the stairs and the bathroom door, keep any anti-slip strips already fitted, and ask to compare a satin finish with a mirror gloss on the test step at the next polish.
Can I use floor wax on stone stairs?+
Better not. Wax or shine oil wears along the walking line, holds dust and can be slippery when wet, and a floor cleaner containing wax leaves a film that gathers dust.
What should I clean granite stairs with?+
Plain water or a pH-neutral cleaner on a well-wrung cloth, then dry. Granite tolerates household acids better than marble, but strong acidic or alkaline cleaners used regularly can damage its sealer. Scouring powder and steel wool stay off it.
Can wooden stairs be polished?+
UpClean does not sand or refinish timber stairs. It cleans and conditions the existing finish, at 60,000 VND per step; refinishing is for a timber contractor.
How often should marble stairs be polished?+
Stairs in daily use are usually maintained once a year. Bring it forward if a wear path shows, if water soaks in and darkens the stone quickly, or if the handrail stays sticky after wiping.
Is there marble polishing near me that also does stairs?+
UpClean takes on stairs on their own, or surveys and quotes them together with a stone floor so that the shine matches. The team works regularly in An Khanh ward (Sala, Thu Thiem, Thao Dien), Binh Trung, Phu My Hung, Thanh My Tay in Binh Thanh and the former Districts 1, 3 and 4, and confirms dates in many other districts when you book.
