What is the best way to clean a mattress at home?
Spot clean it with as little water as you can, and have it dry before bedtime. You need a vacuum with an upholstery or crevice head, a few light-coloured microfibre cloths, a mist spray bottle of clean water, a mild pH-neutral detergent diluted well, baking soda, a fan or dehumidifier, and rubber gloves for urine or vomit.
- Strip the sheets, pillowcases and mattress protector and wash them separately as their labels say.
- Vacuum both sides slowly. Fine dust gathers most along the seams, the piping and the folds.
- Try the solution on a corner that does not show and let it dry, to be sure the cover neither fades nor marks.
- Mist the stain lightly, or put the solution on a cloth, and dab from the outside of the mark towards the middle. No scrubbing, and nothing poured onto the mattress.
- Blot several times with a clean cloth wrung out in plain water. Detergent left behind holds dust and leaves a tide line.
- Deodorise and dry as the sections below describe, and remake the bed only when the mattress is dry right through.
How do I remove sweat, urine, blood and other stains from a mattress?
| Stain | What to do, and what to expect |
|---|---|
| Sweat and old yellowing | Dab with diluted neutral detergent and blot, in several rounds. A mark that has turned dark yellow rarely comes out completely at home. |
| Urine, from a child or a pet | Blot it dry as early as possible; an enzyme product for organic stains can follow. Once urine is in the core, the smell tends to return in humid weather: call a specialist. |
| Blood | Cold water only. Hot water can fix blood more firmly in the fibres. |
| Coffee, tea, fruit juice | Blot up the liquid straight away, then treat the mark with neutral detergent. Rubbing spreads the pigment. |
| Mould spots | Stop using the mattress and move it somewhere airy. Small spots on the surface can be wiped and dried. If the mould is widespread or the smell comes from inside, have it assessed, and consider whether the mattress should be replaced. |
How do I get a smell out of a mattress?
Find the source first. It is usually one of three. Sweat and skin oil have built up in the cover over months; a liquid such as urine, milk or a drink has gone down into the padding; or the core has held damp through the rainy season. A fragrance spray hides the smell for a few hours and adds moisture to the mattress.
For a light smell at the surface, baking soda is the gentle option. Sprinkle a very thin layer over a surface that is already dry (on a damp patch the powder cakes), leave it for a few hours and vacuum it off, keeping children and pets out of the room meanwhile. Diluted vinegar is sometimes used, but it leaves a smell of its own and needs a test on a hidden corner. Keep chlorine bleach off the mattress: it can fade the cover, damage the fibres and leave a harsh smell.
How do I dry a mattress in the rainy season?
Plan the drying before you start cleaning. In Ho Chi Minh City's wet months a mattress dries far more slowly, so choose a day without rain and begin in the morning.
- Stand the mattress on its side, or raise it, so that air reaches both faces.
- Point a standing fan at the damp area and keep the windows open.
- In a closed room, run a dehumidifier or the aircon in Dry mode together with the fan.
- Use no hairdryer on high heat, no steam iron and no heater, and keep latex and foam out of the sun.
- Leave the bedding off while the surface is damp. Rest a palm on the mattress for a few minutes in several places: when nothing feels cool or moist, it is ready.

Why does a latex mattress need a method of its own?
A latex core is a block of foamed rubber pierced by thousands of small air holes. It is springy but heavy, and it tears when it is pulled, above all while damp. Heat, ultraviolet light, oils and solvents speed up its ageing: the latex changes colour, turns brittle and crumbles from the surface inwards. Three rules follow: the least possible water, no heat, no stretching. The cover can be washed; the core is only ever cleaned at the surface.
Spot clean latex as you would any mattress, with two differences: wring the cloth as dry as you can get it, and stop at once if the latex changes colour or turns tacky.
- Do not soak, hose down or machine-wash a latex or foam core. Water that goes deep is very hard to dry and leaves the core heavy and easy to tear.
- Do not put a latex core in direct sun, even when it is wet, and keep hot hairdryers, tumble dryers and irons away from it.
- Do not use chlorine bleach, petrol, oil or solvents on stains.
- Do not fold it, roll it tightly or wring it, and do not lift it by one corner of the cover.
- Do not leave it for long on a damp floor or on a closed surface that lets no moisture out.
What do mattress manufacturers say about washing?
Read the maker's care instructions first, and if the mattress is under warranty, ask the maker before you try any cleaning method. Kymdan, a maker of natural-latex mattresses, is one example.
According to Kymdan's official user guide, its mattresses must not be washed, bleached or ironed, must be kept out of direct sunlight and must never be sun-dried when wet. A wet mattress is to be blotted with a dry cloth and left to dry in the air or under a fan. Kymdan also advises against folding or rolling the mattress, recommends a mattress protector throughout its use, and tells customers not to have a mattress washed on the strength of outside advertising.
For its AirFresh covers, the maker allows the cover to be taken off and cleaned: no more than 30 minutes of soaking in soap or detergent solution, no strong bleach, and drying in the shade. For some other covers it asks customers to contact its technical department.
Which toppers and covers can go in the washing machine?
A topper is a thin pad laid over the main mattress, and whether it can be washed depends entirely on what is inside. Read the label before you decide. A zip proves nothing: some zipped covers may only be washed by hand or dry-cleaned.
To take a cover off, open the zip fully and ease it off evenly on both sides, with two people for a thick mattress. Wash it on a gentle programme in cold water, dry it in the shade and refit it only when completely dry, without stretching the core.
| Topper filling | How to clean it |
|---|---|
| Latex | Never wash the core. Wash the cover as its label says and spot clean the core as you would a latex mattress. |
| Memory foam and other foams | No soaking and no machine for the core: foam takes up water fast and tears easily when wet. Wash the cover only and spot clean the rest. |
| Cotton or synthetic fibre | Many are machine-washable if the label allows it. Use a large-drum machine, a gentle programme and cold or warm water, and rinse well. A topper too big for the drum goes lumpy. |
| Feather | Follow the label exactly. Dry it completely, in a dryer or on the line, and shake the filling out evenly so that it does not clump or begin to smell. |
When should I book a professional clean, and what does it cost?
Treating a stain yourself works when it is fresh and small. A specialist is the safer choice when stains cover a wide area, when urine has gone deep and the smell keeps returning, when a mattress has gone years without cleaning, or when it is a small child's bed.
UpClean prices a mattress by its width and confirms the all-inclusive figure before you book. Each side takes about 45–60 minutes and the mattress is usually dry 6–8 hours later, so book a morning. Vacuuming in several deep passes reduces the dust, dead skin and dust mites at the surface; mites return with time, and cleaning does not replace a doctor's advice.
| Item | Fixed price |
|---|---|
| Single, under 1.4 m wide | 350,000 VND for one side, or 570,000 VND for both sides with dust-mite treatment. |
| Queen, 1.6 m | 450,000 VND for one side, or 670,000 VND for both sides with dust-mite treatment. |
| King, 1.8–2 m | 550,000 VND for one side, or 770,000 VND for both sides with dust-mite treatment. |
| Both sides | Add 120,000 VND. It suits a mattress designed to be turned; otherwise the top and the borders are usually enough. |
| Intensive dust-mite treatment | Add 100,000 VND. Worth considering with a small child, grandparents or anyone who tends to sneeze in bed. |
| Topper | Quoted by size before booking; cleaned in place with a low-moisture method. |
| Pressed-cotton and folding mattresses; feather or cotton-wadding toppers | Send a photo of the item and its label first; these release damp slowly or clump when wet. |
What UpClean does on the visit, and how to book
The mattress is cleaned on the bed; nothing is taken away. The Up specialist, identity-verified and trained to the Up Standard, checks the mattress type, the cover, the care label and whether the warranty is still running, then covers the bed frame and floor and photographs the stains. After several passes with the vacuum, the cover is cleaned by spray extraction with the water matched to the filling, and the moisture is drawn out again at once. Where a maker advises against cleaning its mattress, the specialist tells you before starting and the decision is yours.
Old stains and those that have reached the core may only fade; the specialist says so beforehand and records it in the Up Report, sent by WhatsApp or Zalo with before-and-after photos, the checklist, the times and advice on drying.
To arrange a visit, message or call 0968 726 135 (WhatsApp, Zalo or phone) between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM, any day of the week, with the width and type of the mattress and whether you want one side or both. Enquiries, quotes and the Up Report can be in English. You get the specialist's name and photo ahead of the visit, which is what building management asks for where outside staff have to be registered. Beforehand, strip the bed and leave a socket free nearby.

Frequently asked questions
Can I put a mattress topper in a home washing machine?+
Only when the label allows it, which usually means a cotton or synthetic-fibre topper. With latex and foam toppers, only the cover can be washed. If the topper is too big for your drum, take it to a laundry with a large machine.
My latex mattress has turned yellow. Can that be cleaned off?+
No. Natural latex changes colour gradually as it oxidises. That is the material ageing, not dirt, so no cleaning removes it. Yellowing from sweat or spills on the cover is different: wash the cover as its label says.
A latex mattress got soaked. What should I do?+
Take up as much water as you can with dry cloths, stand the mattress on its side in an airy room and run a fan and a dehumidifier. Do not put it in the sun. If water has gone deep into the core, ask the manufacturer or a specialist for advice.
Can I spray alcohol on a latex mattress to disinfect it?+
It is better not to. Alcohol and solvents can dry out and damage the surface of latex. Keeping the mattress dry and aired, and washing the protector and the cover regularly, is the safer way to keep it clean.
How often does a latex mattress need cleaning?+
Vacuum the surface each time you change the sheets, and wash the mattress protector with the bedding. A deeper clean is needed only when there is a stain or a smell, or after someone has been ill or a small child or a pet has used the bed.
Is it safe to clean a mattress that is still under warranty?+
Ask the maker first, because some manufacturers do not permit washing at all. UpClean's specialist checks the warranty status as well and, where the maker advises against cleaning, says so before any work begins.
