Why does humidity change how you clean a sofa or mattress?
The core of a mattress or sofa cushion is built to carry weight, not to take water. Foam, latex and pressed cotton are porous and hold water for a long time; a spring mattress has a metal frame under several glued layers. Once water gets that deep it is very hard to dry in a normal room, and trapped damp brings mould and odour and can rust springs or deform the layers.
Humid air slows drying further. In Ho Chi Minh City's rainy season a mattress takes noticeably longer to dry, so clean on a dry day and start in the morning. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends drying wet items within 24–48 hours to prevent mould. The working rule for both sofa and mattress follows from that: as little water as possible, and dry the same day.
Do dust mites matter, and does cleaning get rid of them?
Dust mites are too small to see and feed on the skin flakes people shed every night. They favour warmth and humidity, which a tropical climate and hours of body heat in bed provide for most of the year. Sneezing or an itchy nose in bed can point to dust and mites in the mattress.
Cleaning does not sterilise a mattress, and mites return over time. Repeated deep vacuuming reduces the dust, skin flakes and mites at the surface, and routine keeps the level down:
- Wash sheets and pillowcases every week.
- Use a washable mattress protector and wash it with the sheets.
- Vacuum the mattress surface each time you change the sheets.
- Keep the mattress on a slatted base, not flat on a damp floor.
How often should you clean a mattress or sofa?
The signs that it is time: yellowing or dull fabric, armrests and headrests that have darkened, a musty, sweaty or pet smell, or sneezing in bed. Without those signs, these intervals are a reasonable guide.
| Item | Suggested interval |
|---|---|
| Mattress, most households | Deep clean every 6 months. |
| Mattress, with young children or someone sensitive to dust | Every 3–4 months, with the intensive dust-mite treatment added. |
| Mattress in a furnished rental | When you move in. |
| Fabric sofa in daily use | Vacuum weekly; deep clean every 6–12 months. |
| Fabric sofa with pets, small children or someone with allergies | More often than that, and deal with each spill as it happens. |
| Leather sofa | Dust weekly with a soft dry cloth, clean with a leather cleaner every few months, and condition every 6–12 months. |
What can you safely clean yourself on a mattress?
Spot cleaning suits a fresh stain on a small area. Strip the bed, vacuum both sides slowly along the seams and edges, and test any solution on a hidden corner. Mist the stain lightly, or dampen a cloth with well-diluted pH-neutral detergent, and dab from the outer edge inwards; do not scrub and do not pour. Blot with a clean, wrung-out cloth to lift the soap. Dry with the windows open and a fan on the area, or with a dehumidifier or the aircon's Dry mode in a closed room. Remake the bed only when a hand pressed deep into the mattress feels no damp.
Use cold water on blood, because hot water sets it. Blot urine early and use an enzyme cleaner made for organic stains. Avoid chlorine bleach, which fades the cover and damages the fibres. Check the maker's care instructions first, especially under warranty: a manufacturer may rule out washing altogether.
| Mattress type | What to watch |
|---|---|
| Spring | Vacuum the borders well. Keep water from reaching the springs: damp that lingers can cause rust and squeaks. |
| Natural latex | Minimum water, no heat and no direct sun, which ages latex and makes it brittle. Dry it with a fan in the shade, and do not fold it or roll it tightly. |
| Memory foam and other foams | Foam takes up water very fast, so mist only. Never wring or press hard to push water out; that can tear or flatten it. |
| Pressed cotton | It absorbs moisture easily and flattens when wet. Gentle morning sun is acceptable if the maker allows it. |
| Toppers and zip-off covers | Many cotton and synthetic-fibre toppers can be machine-washed if the label says so; with latex or foam toppers, wash the cover only. A zip does not make a cover machine-washable: some are hand-wash or dry-clean only. |
What can you safely clean yourself on a sofa?
Start with the care label, usually sewn under a seat cushion or on the underside of the frame. Its code says what the fabric tolerates: W means water-based cleaners, S means solvent only and no water, W/S means either, and X means vacuuming and light brushing only. If the label is gone, treat the fabric as sensitive.
For a W or W/S fabric, vacuum thoroughly, then wipe small areas with a white microfibre cloth wrung almost dry in mild, diluted washing-up liquid. Wipe again with a cloth dampened in clean water, blot, and dry quickly with a fan and open windows. Most damage at home comes from too much water, hard scrubbing, coloured cloths that bleed dye, and machine-washed cushion covers that shrink.
Leather is not washed. Vacuum the crevices, wipe with a soft cloth carrying a pH-neutral leather cleaner, dry it straight away, and condition it once fully dry. That suits pigmented leather, the coated type common on family sofas, and faux leather. Aniline leather absorbs water and oil readily, and suede and nubuck cannot take liquid at all. Keep alcohol, glass cleaner, multipurpose sprays, bleach, baking soda and cooking oil off any leather.
When is home cleaning not enough?
Wiping the surface cannot reach what sits in the foam. Spray extraction can: the solution goes into the fabric and is drawn straight back out with the dirt, so the core is not soaked. It is time for that when:
- The sofa label says S or X, or the material is velvet, suede, nubuck or aniline leather.
- A drink, milk or urine has soaked into the foam or the mattress core; the smell tends to return in humid weather.
- Mould comes back within days, or the smell comes from inside the cushion.
- Stains cover a large area, or the mattress has gone years without a clean.
- There is ink on leather. Alcohol or bleach at home tends to spread it.

What UpClean does on a visit, and how to book
UpClean cleans sofas and mattresses in the home; nothing is taken away. The Up specialist (an identity-verified, trained UpClean cleaner) checks the material and care label, protects the floor and bed frame, photographs the stains, vacuums in several passes and tests colourfastness on a hidden spot. Fabric and mattress covers are cleaned by spray extraction with the moisture matched to the core; leather is cleaned with very little moisture and conditioned. Water-sensitive materials such as velvet and suede are assessed first, and where a maker advises against cleaning a mattress, the specialist says so before starting.
Each side of a mattress takes about 45–60 minutes and a three-seat sofa about 60–90. A mattress is usually dry in 6–8 hours and a fabric sofa in 4–6, so a morning visit has both ready by bedtime; leather can be used after about 30 minutes. Recent sweat, drink and water marks usually respond well, while a stain that has soaked into the core may only lighten. The specialist tells you which to expect and notes it in your Up Report, the photo report sent by WhatsApp or Zalo after every visit.
To book, call or message 0968 726 135 (phone, WhatsApp or Zalo) between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM, seven days a week. Tell us the mattress size and type, or the number of seats and the material; a photo helps. Quotes, confirmations and reports can be in English, and you receive the specialist's name and photo before the visit.

Frequently asked questions
Can I wash a mattress with water or in a washing machine?+
No. Mattresses are not made for soaking or machine washing. Only sheets, pillowcases, protectors and those covers or thin toppers whose label allows it belong in the machine.
How long does a mattress take to dry after cleaning?+
After an UpClean visit, usually 6–8 hours, depending on the material and the ventilation. After spot cleaning a small stain with a fan running, the surface is often dry in a few hours. Press a hand into several places before remaking the bed.
Is it good to put a mattress in the sun?+
Keep latex and foam out of strong sun. Spring and pressed-cotton mattresses can take gentle morning sun if the maker allows it. In a high-rise, check safety and the building's rules before moving a mattress onto the balcony.
Can a latex or memory-foam mattress be cleaned?+
Yes, as long as it is never soaked or left in direct sun. UpClean uses a low-moisture method with immediate extraction, so the latex or foam core stays dry and keeps its shape.
Why does my sofa still smell after I wipe it down?+
The smell usually sits in the foam, from liquid that soaked in or from a long period of damp. Wiping the surface does not reach it. Spray extraction draws the dirt out from inside.
Is baking soda safe on a sofa or mattress?+
As a dry powder, sprinkled thinly on dry fabric, left a few hours and vacuumed off, it suits most mattress covers and fabric sofas and reduces light odours. Keep children and pets away while it sits. Do not use it on leather: it is mildly alkaline and gritty, and can dry the leather and wear its coating.
