What is a “kiến ba khoang”, and what does it look like?
“Kiến” is the Vietnamese word for ant, but this insect is a small beetle of the genus Paederus, called a rove beetle in English. The name is often typed without accents, as “kien ba khoang”. It lives outdoors and hunts other insects. The trouble starts when it flies into a home after dark.
| Feature | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Size | About one centimetre long. |
| Colour | Bands of black and orange alternating along the body. |
| Where it lives | Rice fields, grassland and damp bushes. |
| What it eats | Other small insects. |
| When you meet it | In the evening, when it often flies indoors. |
| Bite or sting | Neither. The harm comes from the fluid inside its body. |
Do rove beetles bite or sting? Why the skin reacts
They do neither. The injury happens when the beetle is swatted or smeared across the skin, which releases pederin, a toxin carried in its body fluid. People in Vietnam commonly speak of being “stung” by a kiến ba khoang; what they have is a contact dermatitis caused by that toxin.
According to advisories circulated by Vietnam's Ministry of Health and the National Children's Hospital, the skin that was touched may itch and burn a few hours later and show a red streak, followed by blisters and pustules in a long line. Scratching it or treating it wrongly can make the damage spread, let infection in and leave a dark mark.
When and where are rove beetles most common in Vietnam?
They thrive in the hot, humid rainy season, when vegetation is lush and the rice is growing. In northern Vietnam the peak is usually recorded around September and October. In Ho Chi Minh City and the rest of the south they can turn up here and there throughout the rainy season.
More are recorded close to rice fields, vacant plots overgrown with grass, construction sites, canal banks and large areas of greenery. The trait to remember is that light draws them at night. The homes they reach most easily are low-floor apartments, townhouses with a balcony facing open ground, and any room with bright lights on and the windows open.
What should I do if a rove beetle lands on me?
Do not swat it. What you do in the first minutes largely decides how bad the skin damage becomes. The Ministry of Health's advice is not to crush or rub the insect, to blow it off gently or brush it away with a sheet of paper, and to wash the skin it touched with soap and clean water.
- Blow it off gently, or hold out a piece of paper for it to climb onto, and take it away. Never slap it or smear it.
- Wash that area of skin at once with soap and plenty of clean water, even if nothing shows yet.
- Wash your hands thoroughly and keep them away from your eyes: toxin left on the fingers can injure the eye.
- Do not scratch or rub the spot.
- Do not apply leaves, toothpaste, fish sauce, garlic or any other folk remedy. They can make the injury worse and invite infection.
- Wash separately any clothes, sheets or pillowcases that may carry the insect's fluid.
- If a red mark or blisters have already appeared, keep the skin clean and dry. Any cream or ointment should be used as a health worker directs.
When should I see a doctor about a rove beetle rash?
The National Children's Hospital and Vietnam's dermatology hospitals advise going to a medical facility, so that suitable medicine is prescribed and you are not left treating it yourself, in any of the cases below. This page repeats their published advice and does not replace a doctor's instructions.
- The damage is spreading, there are many streaks or large blisters, or it burns and hurts a great deal.
- It is around the eye or on the eyelid, or the eye is red, gritty or watering after contact.
- There is pus, fever or swollen glands, which are signs of secondary infection.
- The person affected is a young child, has an underlying illness or has sensitive skin.
- It is no better after a few days of care at home.
How do I get a rove beetle out of the room safely?
One rule covers every method: the beetle must not be crushed on skin, or on anything that regularly touches skin.
| Method | How to do it |
|---|---|
| Paper or a cup | Lay a sheet of paper for it to crawl onto, or turn a cup over it, then put it outside or into a bin with a lid. |
| Handheld vacuum cleaner | For beetles clinging to walls, ceilings and curtains. Empty the dust bag outdoors afterwards. |
| What not to swat with | Bare hands, a face towel or a pillow. |
| If one is crushed on a table or a bed | Put on gloves and wipe the surface clean with soap and water. |
| Insect spray | Only a product with a registration number from the Ministry of Health, used as its label says, when nobody is in the room and well away from food and children's toys. Do not mix products, and do not spray beds, pillows or clothes directly. |
How do I stop rove beetles flying in? Start with the lights
Light is what pulls rove beetles into a home, so changing how you use lamps in the evening does far more than spraying once they are already in the room.
- Draw the curtains and shut the windows before switching on the lights in the evening, first of all in rooms that face trees or open ground.
- Switch off balcony, corridor and garden lights that are not needed, and do not stand a bright lamp right beside an open window.
- The Ministry of Health suggests replacing fluorescent lamps with yellow light, which attracts fewer insects.
- During the season, do not sit, or let children play, directly under a bright outdoor light in the evening.
- If the window is open for the breeze, turn down the screen brightness and switch off the desk lamp.
Screens, nets and the garden: how do I block the way in?
- Fit insect screens to the windows and to the door onto the balcony. Check them and mend any tears before the rainy season.
- Sleep under a net, young children above all, as the Ministry of Health advises. Before bed, shake out the blanket and pillows and look round the bed.
- Shake clothes and towels that dried outdoors or hung near a window before you wear or use them.
- Clear undergrowth, cut the grass and remove rubbish and rotting leaves round the house: this is where the beetles shelter during the day.
- Wear long sleeves and long trousers when working in the garden, or near fields or vacant land, towards dusk.
Do I need the house or garden sprayed against rove beetles?
For most apartments and townhouses, no: fewer lights, screens and cleared grass round the house are enough. Spraying is worth considering only where the grounds are large and border open land or a broad stretch of greenery, and the beetles still come in numbers after all of the above.
It has to be done by a provider that is eligible to offer pest-control services, with a product registered with the Ministry of Health. Buying a product and spraying a wide area yourself can affect young children, pets and ornamental plants, and may still leave the real cause, the light, untouched.
What UpClean does about rove beetles, and how to book a survey
UpClean surveys free of charge and points out what is letting insects in: a vent with no mesh, a garden light, shrubs growing right up to a door. You then receive a written plan and an all-inclusive quote. Where treatment with a product is part of the plan, UpClean's own pest-control technicians carry it out. Up specialists, as UpClean calls its identity-verified, trained staff, cover belongings, keep an eye on every working point and tidy up when the treatment is over.
After the visit an Up Report arrives by WhatsApp or Zalo. It is UpClean's written record of the job, and for this problem it sets out the recommendations the household can follow through the rainy season. UpClean has declared its eligibility to provide pest-control services as required by regulation; the declaration and product information are available on request.
To book, message or call 0968 726 135 (phone, WhatsApp or Zalo) from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, seven days a week, with photos of the insect and of where you found it. The enquiry, the quote and the Up Report can be in English. If your building asks residents to register outside staff with building management, UpClean sends the specialist's name and photo in advance for that purpose.

Frequently asked questions
Is the “kiến ba khoang” really an ant?+
No. It is a small beetle of the genus Paederus, and it calls for a completely different approach from ants: screens, curtains and fewer lights, with no crushing.
Do rove beetles bite?+
No. They neither bite nor sting. The dermatitis appears when the insect is crushed on the skin and the toxin pederin comes into contact with it.
I crushed a rove beetle on my skin by accident. What should I do?+
Wash the skin straight away with soap and plenty of clean water, wash your hands well, and do not scratch or rub your eyes. Watch the area for a few days. See a dermatologist if the damage spreads, is near the eye, or comes with fever or pus.
Should I put toothpaste or leaves on a rove beetle rash?+
No. Hospitals advise against leaves and other folk remedies because they can worsen the injury and lead to secondary infection. Creams and ointments should be used as a health worker directs.
When is rove beetle season in Vietnam?+
Mainly the hot, humid rainy season, and the beetles are most active at night where there is light. In the north they usually peak around September and October; in the south you can meet them all through the rains.
Will a bug zapper or mosquito lamp get rid of rove beetles?+
A lamp can pull more rove beetles towards the light, so if you use one, put it far from windows, seats and beds. It does not replace window screens, curtains and the habit of switching off lights near an open door or window.
Does a rove beetle rash leave a scar?+
Handled correctly and without secondary infection, it usually heals, though a dark mark can remain for a time. Scratching, rubbing and folk remedies raise the risk of infection and of a mark that lasts.
What is the most effective way to keep rove beetles out of an apartment?+
Stop the light from drawing them in: curtains drawn and windows shut when the lights go on in the evening, insect screens fitted, and grass and rubbish cleared round the building where you can. Any that are already indoors go out on paper, in a cup or into a vacuum cleaner, never under a hand.
