Cockroaches, ants and geckos in Saigon apartments: what brings them in and what to do

Written by the UpClean team · Reviewed by: Trần Nguyễn Hữu Nhật · Updated

Cockroaches, ants and geckos come into an apartment for food, water and a sheltered gap to hide in. Cut those off first: leave the kitchen clean and dry every night, keep food in sealed containers, seal gaps around pipes and cover floor drains. Then use enclosed bait where cockroaches and ants travel instead of spraying the ones you see, and reduce the insects that geckos come to hunt. If young cockroaches still appear after three to four weeks, or ants are in several rooms, ask an eligible provider for a survey.

Why does a clean apartment still get cockroaches, ants and geckos?

Ho Chi Minh City's hot, humid climate and heavy rain favour insects, and a high-rise gives them routes: cockroaches move along service shafts, rubbish chutes and shared pipes from one apartment to the next, or arrive in cardboard boxes and second-hand appliances. A well-kept apartment can still have them when a neighbouring unit or a common area does.

The ants on the worktop are workers following a scent trail to food; the nest is hidden in a wall gap, under a loose tile, behind the cabinets or in a plant pot. Geckos come for insects to hunt, a warm place to shelter and a gap to enter by. Dirt and your food do not interest them.

Which pest is it? How to tell them apart

Treatment depends on the species. The cockroach descriptions follow the University of California's integrated pest management programme (UC IPM).

What you seeWhat it is and where it lives
Small light-brown cockroach with two dark stripes behind the headGerman cockroach, about 1.3 cm. Lives entirely indoors around kitchen cabinets, fridges and bathrooms, breeds fast and is usually the harder one to control.
Large reddish-brown cockroachAmerican cockroach, about 5 cm. Lives in sewers, drain pits and service shafts and comes in through floor drains, damaged pipes and gaps under doors.
Many small wingless cockroaches by dayNymphs: a sign of a large population breeding inside the home.
Tiny yellow-brown ants that run fastThey go for sweet and greasy food. Many such species have several queens and nest in warm, damp gaps such as cabinet joints and behind appliances.
Small black ants in long linesThey usually come from outside along the base of walls and door sills, more so after heavy rain or in very hot weather.
Small lizard on walls and ceilingsHouse gecko. No venom, no damage to belongings, and it eats mosquitoes and small cockroaches.

What are the signs of cockroaches, and where do they hide?

Cockroaches are active at night, so traces usually come before sightings. Switch the kitchen light on suddenly after midnight, or leave sticky traps overnight under the sink and behind the fridge to gauge numbers.

  • Droppings: black specks like ground pepper from German cockroaches, longer ridged pellets from American ones.
  • Egg cases: hard, brown and bean-shaped. According to UC IPM each German cockroach case releases about 30 nymphs.
  • Hiding places: under the sink, behind the fridge, dishwasher and microwave, cabinet hinges and drawer backs, floor drains, service shafts, stored cardboard.

How do I get rid of cockroaches in an apartment?

UC IPM stresses that pesticide alone will not solve a cockroach problem; sanitation is the foundation. It takes weeks: UC IPM notes that a female German cockroach can produce a new egg case every few weeks, so a few survivors are enough to rebuild the population. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that cockroach allergens can trigger asthma attacks, particularly in children, so wipe droppings up damp, wearing gloves and a mask, and do not sweep them dry.

  • Clean: wash and dry the sink and hob before bed, keep food and pet food in lidded containers, take the rubbish out every evening, wipe grease from the wall and extractor hood, fix dripping taps.
  • Close the routes: seal gaps around pipes with silicone, fit floor drains with a mesh cover, keep water in the traps of drains that are rarely used, throw out spare cardboard.
  • Bait: according to UC IPM bait does not draw cockroaches from a distance, so place many small dots of gel bait where they shelter, out of reach of children and pets and off food-preparation surfaces.
  • Use only products with a Ministry of Health registration number, follow the label, and never spray on or beside bait: the smell makes cockroaches avoid it.
  • Monitor with sticky traps; a falling weekly count shows the bait is working.

How do I get rid of ants in the apartment?

Wiping up or spraying the ants you see helps for a few hours to a few days. UC IPM advises that spraying indoors does not stop more from coming in, and describes how a colony of Pharaoh ants, a very small species that often nests indoors, can split into several new nests when disturbed. Slow-acting bait lets workers carry it back to the nest before they die.

  • Remove the food: UC IPM advises clean sealed containers, not plastic bags or opened packaging; do not leave pet bowls out overnight.
  • Erase the trail: according to UC IPM, wiping it with soapy water can be as effective as a spray at temporarily removing foraging ants, because it removes the scent.
  • Place enclosed bait stations with a Ministry of Health registration number beside the trail, out of reach of children and pets.
  • Leave the bait alone; UC IPM gives 5 to 10 days to see fewer ants and several weeks for full control.
  • Once numbers have dropped, seal cracks, pipe edges and skirting gaps.

Are geckos in the house harmful, and how do I reduce them?

House geckos do not bite unless held and do not damage belongings. The concern is droppings: the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that reptiles often carry Salmonella and can contaminate surfaces, and names children under five, older people and those with weakened immunity as the groups who should avoid contact.

Poison and glue boards are not advised: poison bait can be swallowed by children and pets, a poisoned gecko may die and smell inside a ceiling void, and glue also catches birds and cats. For one or two in a room, open the door, switch off the light inside and switch one on outside.

  • Reduce the insects: switch off porch and balcony lights you do not need, or use warm yellow bulbs, which usually attract fewer flying insects; draw the curtains in the evening and fit window screens.
  • Close the gaps around aircon pipes and service shafts, and fit seals under the front and balcony doors.
  • Clean droppings wearing disposable gloves: pick them up with a damp paper towel, wash the surface with detergent, then use a surface disinfectant as its label directs, and wash your hands with soap. Never mix cleaning products.

Do home remedies work on cockroaches, ants and geckos?

RemedyWhat to expect
Vinegar, lemon juice, cinnamon, chalkThey interrupt an ant trail briefly, then the ants find another way. Vinegar and lemon can dull natural stone such as marble.
Bay leaves or lemon peel for cockroachesNo reliable evidence that they reduce a cockroach population.
Eggshells, coffee grounds or garlic for geckosNo reliable evidence. Old eggshells can attract ants and flies, which is more food for geckos.

When should I call pest control in Ho Chi Minh City, and what should I ask?

Doing it yourself is usually enough for a few cockroaches or one ant trail in one area. Call a provider when cockroach nymphs still appear after three to four weeks, when cockroaches or ants are in several rooms, when correctly placed ant bait has changed nothing after several weeks, or when ants nest in a service shaft, socket or appliance. Geckos that stay numerous after you have cut the lights and sealed the gaps most likely point to a large insect source that is hard to find yourself.

Ask any provider whether it is eligible to provide pest-control services and whether its products have a valid registration number in Vietnam, and get the plan and the re-entry time in writing beforehand.

MethodWhen it is used
Bait and bait stationsSuited to cockroaches and ants: little odour, little disruption, and it reaches the colony through its foraging. It takes time, and placements must be left alone.
Residual sprayingApplied where insects cross, such as the base of walls, under cabinets and around floor drains; typical for American cockroaches from drains or when numbers are high. Food is put away and a re-entry time applies.
Traps and physical measuresSticky traps, sealing gaps and removing standing water accompany the other methods and reduce the chemical needed.

What UpClean does, and how to book

UpClean surveys the home free of charge to identify the species and where it starts, then sends a written, all-inclusive quote with the method, treated areas, re-entry time and follow-up visits. UpClean's own pest-control technicians carry out the treatment with products that hold a valid registration number in Vietnam. They choose the method by species, severity and the space; for ants they prefer point-placed bait and keep spraying in living areas to a minimum. The service does not poison geckos.

Up specialists, UpClean's identity-verified and trained staff, cover food, dishes and children's things, deep-clean the kitchen before a cockroach treatment so the bait is not competing with grease and crumbs, watch each working point and wipe food-contact surfaces afterwards. You then receive an Up Report by WhatsApp or Zalo: a record of bait positions, before-and-after photos and the follow-up schedule. UpClean has declared its eligibility to provide pest-control services as required by regulation; the declaration and product information are available on request.

To book, send photos of the insects or droppings to 0968 726 135 on WhatsApp or Zalo, or call between 7:00 AM and 8:00 PM on any day. Enquiries, quotes and the Up Report can be in English. Many apartment buildings ask residents to register outside staff with building management first; UpClean sends the specialist's name and photo for that.

Frequently asked questions

Why do cockroaches come back after I spray?+

A spray mostly kills the cockroaches it touches, while the eggs sit in a hard case and most of the population stays deep in cabinet joints. With food, water and shelter unchanged, newly hatched nymphs replace them quickly.

Are the small cockroaches in my kitchen German cockroaches?+

Usually, if they are light brown with two dark stripes and gather around the kitchen cabinets and fridge. American cockroach nymphs are also small, but darker, and stay near drains.

I put ant bait down and now there are more ants. Is that normal?+

Yes. The workers are feeding on the bait and carrying it back. Leave it alone and do not wipe or spray around it; numbers usually fall over the following days.

Is bait safe to use around children and pets?+

UC IPM describes enclosed ant bait stations as fairly safe when kept out of reach of small children and pets. Choose registered products and read the label.

Are house geckos poisonous?+

No. They have no venom and almost never bite unless held. Their droppings can carry Salmonella, so clean them up wearing gloves and wash your hands with soap.

Do we need to leave the apartment during pest control treatment?+

Not always. With bait or spot treatment you usually only keep away from the area being worked on; residual spraying has its own re-entry time, given in writing beforehand.
