Are house geckos harmful?
Not in the way insects are. The small lizards on walls and ceilings in Saigon homes are mostly small geckos that live close to people, and they help by eating mosquitoes, ants and small cockroaches. What bothers a household is the droppings, the calling at night and the sense that the home is not clean, particularly with small children about. The health point below is a reason to clean droppings up carefully, not a reason for alarm.
| Concern | What is known |
|---|---|
| Bites | A house gecko does not bite a person unless it is caught and held. |
| Venom | It has none. |
| Damage | It does not gnaw or spoil belongings. |
| Droppings | The real concern. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that reptiles, healthy-looking ones included, often carry Salmonella bacteria in the gut and can contaminate the surfaces they touch. |
| Who should take most care | The CDC names children under 5, older people and people with weakened immune systems as the groups that should avoid contact with reptiles, and recommends washing hands with soap under running water after touching a reptile or the place where it lives. |
Why do geckos come into the house?
Three things bring them: insects to hunt, a warm, enclosed place to rest and a gap to come and go by. A dirty home or the food on your table is not the attraction.
In the evening, porch and balcony lights and the light shining through glass doors draw moths, mosquitoes and small flies, and a gecko simply waits on the wall or ceiling beside the bulb. By day it hides behind cabinets and picture frames, along curtain rails, in service ducts and in the gaps of a plasterboard ceiling. A flat on a high floor is not exempt: geckos travel along service ducts, pipe gaps and corridors, or arrive with furniture that is moved in, and they stay as long as there are enough insects to eat. Chasing them out one at a time changes little while those three conditions remain.
How do I get a gecko out of a room?
For one or two that have strayed in, let them leave by themselves: open the door, turn the room light off and put a light on outside. The other way is to wait until the gecko comes down to a low part of the wall, place a plastic box gently over it, slide a piece of stiff card underneath and release it in the garden or on the balcony. Wear gloves, or wash your hands with soap afterwards.
Do not swat at a gecko on the ceiling with a broom. It is likely to drop onto someone and shed its tail.
How do I clean gecko droppings safely?
Gecko droppings are small dark pellets with a white tip at one end. Put on disposable gloves and work in this order:
- On a kitchen worktop, do not sweep the droppings dry or vacuum them. Lift them with a damp paper towel and put it in a rubbish bag that you tie shut.
- Wash the surface with water and an ordinary detergent, then apply a surface disinfectant exactly as its label directs.
- Never mix cleaning products, least of all a chlorine bleach with anything containing ammonia or acid: the mixture can give off toxic gas.
- Rewash any dishes and cooking utensils that were left uncovered where droppings may have fallen. Keeping them in a cupboard with doors avoids the problem.
- Wash your hands with soap under running water when you finish, as the CDC recommends.
- Marks that have sat on fabric curtains for a long time may mean the curtains need washing.
How do I reduce geckos by cutting the lights and the insects?
With nothing to hunt, geckos move elsewhere of their own accord. This is the step that matters most and lasts longest.
- Switch off porch and balcony lights when nobody needs them. Where a light must stay on, choose a warm yellow bulb, which usually attracts fewer flying insects than a white one.
- In the evening, draw the curtains or close the glass doors so that indoor light does not bring insects to the windows.
- Fit insect screens to windows and balcony doors, and patch tears regularly.
- Once a week, empty standing water from plant-pot saucers and the fridge drip tray, and get rid of mosquito larvae.
- Keep the bin closed, empty it daily and wipe crumbs off the worktop, which keeps down flies, ants and cockroaches.
- Clear cobwebs and dead insects from ceiling corners, window sills and around the lamps.
Which gaps and hiding places should I close off?
Close the ways in, then take away the shelter. Small gaps can be filled with silicone or another suitable material.
| Where | What to do |
|---|---|
| Aircon pipes, water pipes through walls, service ducts | Seal round them. |
| Front door, balcony door, door to the yard | Fit a seal along the bottom to close the gap. |
| Plasterboard ceiling | Check the joint between ceiling and wall and the inspection hatch, and tell a technician about any large opening. |
| Cabinets, shelves and wall decorations | Stand furniture a little way off the wall and clean behind it regularly. Where droppings keep appearing, avoid hanging pictures, calendars and ornaments flat against the wall. |
| Storeroom, under the stairs, balcony | Clear out things that have sat for a long time. Cardboard boxes and piled-up belongings shelter geckos and insects alike. |
| Townhouse or villa with a garden | Cut back climbers on the walls and branches that touch the roof; they are the routes from the garden into the house. |
What does not work against geckos?
Most of the remedies passed around have almost no scientific study behind them for use in homes. Poison and glue are a different matter, and UpClean advises against both. Poison bait can be swallowed by a small child, a dog or a cat, and a poisoned gecko may die inside a ceiling void and smell. Glue kills the animal slowly and painfully and also catches birds and pets.
| Remedy | What is known |
|---|---|
| Eggshells | No reliable evidence. Shells left out for long can attract ants and flies, which means more prey for geckos. |
| Coffee grounds, tobacco | Weak evidence. Damp coffee grounds go mouldy. Tobacco contains nicotine, is dangerous if a child or pet swallows it and should not be put out indoors. |
| Garlic, onion, chilli, camphor | A strong smell may keep a gecko away from one spot for a short while, but nothing shows that it lowers the number in the house. |
| Peacock feathers | No scientific basis. |
| Ultrasonic repellers | No independent evidence that they work on geckos. They do not replace reducing insects and sealing gaps. |
| Fewer lights, fewer insects, sealed gaps | Well founded, because it acts directly on the gecko's food, shelter and way in. |
When is it worth calling pest control about geckos?
Call when geckos remain numerous although the outside lights are off and the gaps are closed. That pattern usually means the house has a large source of insects that a household cannot easily trace: cockroaches breeding in a service duct, mosquitoes in the roof gutters or drain pits, or flies coming from the drains. Once that prey is under control, gecko numbers usually fall with it. UpClean's pest-control service treats the cockroaches, mosquitoes and flies in such a case; it does not set out to poison the geckos.
What UpClean does about geckos, and how to book
UpClean's wasp, bee and gecko service aims for fewer geckos indoors and fewer returning, not for killing them. After a free survey of where they shelter and how they get in, you receive a written plan and an all-inclusive quote. The work uses deterrent measures and, where possible, catching geckos and releasing them outside. No poison bait is used for geckos indoors, because of the risk to small children and pets. The Up specialist, a member of UpClean's identity-verified and trained staff, notes each gap, light and hiding place, advises on sealing, screens and lighting, and wipes droppings and marks from walls, curtains and cabinet surfaces.
Where the cause is an insect problem, UpClean's own pest-control technicians treat the cockroaches, mosquitoes or flies with products registered with Vietnam's Ministry of Health, while the Up specialist covers belongings, watches each working point and cleans up afterwards. UpClean has declared its eligibility to provide pest-control services as required by regulation; the declaration and product information are available on request.
After the visit an Up Report arrives by WhatsApp or Zalo, with before-and-after photos and the list of gaps, lights and shelter spots to attend to. To book, send photos of the places where you usually see geckos or their droppings to 0968 726 135 on WhatsApp or Zalo; the line is open from 7:00 AM to 8:00 PM, seven days a week. Enquiries, quotes and the report can be in English. If your building asks residents to register outside staff with management, the specialist's name and photo are sent to you in advance for that purpose.

Frequently asked questions
Do house geckos bite, and are they venomous?+
House geckos carry no venom and hardly ever bite a person who is not holding them. What needs managing is the droppings, which may carry Salmonella: wear gloves to clear them and wash your hands with soap afterwards.
Gecko droppings fell into our food. What should we do?+
Throw that portion of food away, wash the utensils and the surface, and wash your hands with soap. If someone has already eaten it and develops diarrhoea, fever or stomach pain, see a doctor, particularly for a young child or an older person.
Why do geckos gather around the ceiling light?+
The light attracts moths, mosquitoes and small flies, and the geckos wait there to hunt them. Turning off lights you do not need, using warm yellow bulbs and fitting window screens cuts this down considerably.
Why are there geckos in a high-floor apartment?+
They can travel along service ducts, gaps around pipes and corridors, or come in with furniture, and they remain while the flat has enough insects for them. Seal round the aircon pipes and service ducts, and reduce the insects.
Will geckos go away if I get rid of the insects?+
Without prey they move on by themselves, which is why reducing insects and evening lights is the lasting step. If numbers stay high, there is probably an insect source you have not found.
What do gecko droppings look like?+
Small, dark pellets with a white tip at one end, usually found on tables, kitchen shelves, floors, walls and curtains.
How much does gecko control cost in Ho Chi Minh City?+
UpClean has no standard rate. It depends on whether one room or the whole house is involved and on how many entry points have to be recorded; geckos throughout a house need a survey on site, which is free. The quote is all-inclusive and in writing.
